20th Annual Loafers Car Show - Hannibal, MO May 9, 2015

The Loafers Car Club extends an open invitation to all car enthusiasts to attend the 20th annual Loafers Car Show on Saturday May 9th, 2015. As in the past the show will be held in historic Hannibal, MO, and bring over 300 historic and special interest vehicles to our town. The show will fill North Main Street and some adjacent side streets from Broadway to North Street. Registration on show day is $25 and will be from 8 AM until noon. Participants can pre-register until the cut off date of April 21 for only $20 (visit the Loafers Facebook page for a list of the advantages of pre-registering). The cars will be displayed until mid afternoon. Spectators are welcome anytime and there is no admission charge. Trophies will be awarded to the top three vehicles in each of the 32 judged classes. In addition, there will be 8 special awards as well as a large assortment of door prizes. Again this year a restored antique gas pump from the 50’s will be raffled off at the show. It has been restored by Loafers Car Club member Stephen VanHouten. A total of only 500 tickets will be sold at $10.00 each and are currently available from Loafers club members. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the show. The winner is not required to be present and the pump will be delivered free within 100 miles.

A wide range of vehicles will participate in the show including antiques, classics, street rods, lead sleds, rat rods, Mustangs, Corvettes, imports, etc. Last year The Best of Show was awarded to Karmy and Betty Schone from Chapin IL with their 1957 Chevrolet 150 sedan. While Loafers club members do not compete with entries in the show they do display their cars and show participants are encouraged to vote for their favorite Loafers car. The 2014 favorite was the black over orange big block powered 1969 Chevy Chevelle two door hardtop owned by Ron Raney. Ron personally performed a frame off restoration of this car in his own shop. Both the favorite Loafers car and the Best of Show car will be on the 2015 t-shirts that are provided free to each pre-registered show participant and other participants as long as the supply lasts. If there are any remaining t-shirts they will be made available to anyone for a donation.

  • The major sponsors of the 2014 event were: Tom Boland Ford, Poage Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep, Chester Bross Construction Company, Pepsi Refreshment Services, Jason Utterback/American Family Insurance, Trust/GDC Insurance Services, Golden Eagle Distributing Co, Kyle Mack/Shelter Insurance and F&M Bank and Trust Company. Many other local businesses donated money for class trophies and items for door prizes. It is anticipated that these same businesses will again sponsor the car show.

Local businesses will be open and encourage spectators and car show participants to visit their shops in Historic Hannibal, MO. Children may engage in Hot Wheel “racing” while the adults shine and show their cars, visit antique shops, tour the Mark Twain Home and other historic buildings, and shop at local stores.

The Loafers Car Club is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of giving back to the community while preserving and enjoying historical automobiles. The public is invited to attend, at no charge, the main events of the year. Events include the April through October Hot Dog Cruise-in held in the Steamboat Bend Shopping Center the first Saturday evening each month and is sponsored by County Market and AutoZone, the annual Car Show held in May in downtown Hannibal, and the Reunion Cruise-in held each September. Donations received during these events are used for various charitable causes such as Leaps of Love (helps childhood cancer families), scholarships for one or two graduating high school students who are planning to continue their education in an automotive related field, the Great River Honor Flight, as well as donations to other needy causes.

Individual club members all have a common interest of vehicles that are propelled by the internal combustion engine. There is a considerable variety of members’ background and involvement in restoring or maintaining their vehicles. Members range from a few professional mechanics and body/repair-shop owners, to most whose primary career has little in common with the automobile hobby. Some members, while not professional, have developed the skill to restore their automobile including rebuilding the engine, fabricating body parts, painting, and restoring the interior. Most members personally perform some of the work but “farm out” some aspects such as the interior and paint. Some do not have time to develop the skills needed for restoration and handle all of these functions by merely explaining what they want and writing a check.

“Quality” of vehicles owned by members range from “show” to “driver” to “rat” depending on how the member plans to enjoy the vehicle. Some attend car shows with the primary intent of winning their class or best of show and may trailer their vehicle to prevent any rock chips, keep the vehicle spotless, etc. Others may want to merely drive their vehicle on nice days to various functions and enter a few shows with the main intent to visit with other car owners and view the other vehicles. Some get tremendous satisfaction in pulling a vehicle out of a fencerow or old barn after having been ignored for decades, then bringing it to the point of reliable and decent looking transportation.

At the present time the Loafers membership consists of approximately 60 families. Membership is open to everyone however to become a member a person must be sponsored by an existing member, have a special interest or historic car or truck, and be willing to assist in the various activities of the club.
